Linux is good for a personal system. It isn't like the other unices though, so has it's own category: "Linux" FreeBSD is good for a server (IMHO: personal machine also). It is pure BSD based which many people prefer. Linux does have some BSD but it's mostly Linux/SYSV based. Linux has tons of people throwing drivers and programs in while FreeBSD has more of a closed core development team and is more professional. Drop by their two web sites to look at features of each: www.linux.org www.freebsd.org Linux seems to be better for the beginner because it has a lot more new user help documents and howtos. (IMHO).
