XVScan works under FreeBSD with HP ScanJet series scanners. XVscan is based on xv, image manipulation software for X Windows. It handles 24-bit color, 8-bit greyscale and 1-bit monochrome images. XVScan supports many image formats including GIF, JPEG, TIFF (compressed and uncompressed), PostScript (requires ghostscript), PBM/PGM/PPM (raw and ascii), X11 Bitmap, XPM (X PixMap), Sun Rasterfile, BMP, IRIS Rasterfile, Targa (24-bit), and FITS (greyscale). Scanner-level gamma correction will improve color scans by allocating colors to capture a greater range of detail. Also included in this release are numerous updates to the ScanJet API which allows other applications to control an HP ScanJet scanner. XVScan is also available for Linux and HP-UX 9.x and 10.x. The list price for XVScan is $50 for ftp or email delivery, available on 3.5" floppies or 4mm DAT tape for an additional $15 in the United States or $25 internationally.
