You sound like you're definitely *not* a clueless bozo, and are probably
doing most things right.  Just to be safe though, you could double check
some of the excellent FAQ's that are available-- especially the FreeBSD
handbook's chapters on networking.

From what you're saying, it sounds like the ppp script might not be
succssfully logging in after all, and automatically breaks the connection
after a timeout delay.  That's just a rough guess-- I've never actually
tinkered with ppp but am using slip.

For those of you with more direct ppp experience, would it make sense for
Christoff to do a "netstat -in" to check the status of the ppp
connection?  (Does ppp report any info back that way?)  

I assume another thing to try is simply pinging the gateway or any other
host on the ISP's side of the connection to see if anything is getting in
and out again.
