what changes do I need to make to XFree86 so that it works with
   crypted passwords?

I put the XFree86 1.1 sources for mit/clients/xdm on
nova.cc.purdue.edu in pub/386bsd/submissions/XFree86/xdm-src-1.1.tar.Z.

tar xzf xdm-src-1.1.tar.Z.
xmkmf -a
make

should create xdm. Rich
