The if_vx driver is already in the development sources, and it fits
right back into 2.1R as well.  The driver is PIO mode only however, so
it eats up your CPU.

The 3c590 also seems to cause problems for other systems, in partic-
ular, it runs only in one of the PCI slots when doing bus-master DMA
(looks like a gratuitous misunderstanding of the PCI architecture).

Get a DEC-21040 based card.  They are built by SMC (84<something>),
by Cogent, and i think also by some other vendors.
