Hi, we have a 486-66Mhz here in the lab that we wish to install a
Un*x operating system on. One problem is that the system got
trashed, including the CD-ROM controller in DOS. We therefore
were hoping to make this a Un*x X station. We have tried installing
Linux & FreeBSD from CD-ROM's, to no avail. FreeBSD seems to give
a better clue as to a possible problem. The system has a Mitsumi
CD ROM and an Intel EtherExpress card. On boot up of the installation
disk, it claims that it detects a Misumi CD-ROM at mcd0 with some
sort of conflict and one at mcd1 (port: 0x340-0x343, irq=11), but
the install program does not see the CDROM. I was wondering if the
Intel card might be part of the problem. The install disk has a
note that to get the Intel EtherExpress card to work, one must
disable mcd0 & mcd1. It seems the system gets confused. My question
is, can FreeBSD even be run with both of these peices of equipment,
or if we are simply hosed. Any help would be appreciated.
