INN is in the ports collection, and suck compiles out of the box. This is what I do and it works great as you can see. If this is too much effort for you, tin has an '-S' option to save news. However, the corresponding '-R' option (for reading the news you saved) isn't implemented yet :-(. So what I did before was to use tin to download the news and gnus v5 (from within emacs) to read it.
