On the other hand I have a 486 box that Linux thinks it has 2 IDE 
controllers. It doesn't, but Linux complained incessantly whenever it 
tried to sync the phantom drives so I gave up on the install since I 
couldn't really follow the screen properly with messages everywhere. On 
FreeBSD I booted with the -C option, disabled wdc1 and everything worked 
fine. Then I built a kernel with no wdc1 and everything continues to work 
fine. This machine is my home gateway to the Internet (dedicated dialup PPP)
and runs CERN httpd proxy, some TIS fwtk stuff and SAMBA.
