While i don't think that this is a very good approach to assign an A
record for the whole domain name, that's certainly not your problem
here.

I can't really understand what you are doing, in particular, why you
are calling `mail' with the -r option:

Anyway, the normal way to arrange this is to put

Cwdomain

into your machine.mc (or sendmai.cf) file, to tell this sendmail that
it should also take mail addressed to the entire domain as being local
to itself.
