Probably because the lpd system by default sends plain text header pages
to the printer.  If that's a PostScript printer, those header pages are
nothing but errors.  You want to turn them off in /etc/printcap.

and look for the section called `Printing.'  There's about 20000 words
of thorough documentation on setting up printers, from accounting to
remote printers to header pages to filters, and more.
