It sounds like your SCSI hard disks have a bad sector(s).  I am running 
3 
systems with 2940's and they are OK.  I did have a problem when 
installing one hard disk.  I had to use BIOS utilities, access with 
ctrl-A, to format hard disk, it took about 4 hours!!!

I also had problems with drive translation of > 1GB hard disk option is 
SCSI BIOS.
