There are a couple of ways to do this: 1. copy the boot floppy, and mount it as UFS filesystem; now you can change it, for instance change .profile Keep in mind that the floppy is TIGHT in space 2. For 2.1, look in the FLOPPIES directory on the binary CD - there is a 'recovery' floppy image that does most what you wnat. Personally, I just NFS-mount the CDrom from another box - then I have the whole system at hand. Kundo's to the BSDI folk for listening to my continuous wining about a recover-floppy, and doing something about it as well... Geert Jan
