If it is something like 'device not found' or 'cannot open' (of course test.gif must be there), it is because you don't have the floppy device the mtools want to see. Run from the /dev directory the command sh MAKEDEV fd0. Another possibility is that your floppy is not properly formatted. There ARE problems with 720K 3,5" and 360K/720K/1.44M 5,25 disks (i.e. remaining: preferably use 1.2M 5,25 and 1.44M 3,5" disks).
