I have a related question. Suppose you had a FreeBSD box serving as a
backup "server" of sorts in that it had a tape drive attached to it, and
performed nightly backups of other machines by rsh'ing to the machine
and firing off a dump (piping the results into dd on the local box).

Now, suppose you add a bunch of NT machines to your setup, and assume
that you want to back them up regularly. Taking the tape drive off the
FreeBSD machine is a hassle; you'd rather just "throw them in the
rotation" somehow.

Could you use the vnconfig(8) program to create a "synonym" for
/dev/rmt0, and then NFS-export that file? If so, could you then NFS
mount it on an NT box and simply write your backup to the NFS-mounted
"drive"?

Ok, ok, so it would be far easier to simply buy another tape drive to
use on the NT box, but let's assume (for now) that that isn't an option.
