Cool things have come out it, like PCI-TO-PCI data transfer for live video. Cool hacks on "tv" a program which I wrote and then later on modified by a few people. tv can take snapshots of live pictures or raw video recording, etc... The FreeBSD Mbone hackers hang out on the multimedia mailing list and he have such things such as sdr, vat, vic, etc... There are other projects dealing with X10.
