Well, just to clarify this: it's not insane because of this. All 8514/A-descendant cards (to the best of my knowledge, including all S3 chips, and in particular all Mach's, since they are [or were] register compatible with the 8514/A) clash with the port address 0x2e8. The crime of ATI is that their newest chips are disturbed by writing to register 0x2e9 _even while the card is not yet in `enhanced' mode_.
