It's possible the cable is miswired or malfunctioning ... that might
prevent the computer from seeing the information the modem returns.  

It's more probable the modem is not set to echo its results back.  Try
typing

	ATE1V1&W

to the modem.  That might help force it to echo results back.

What program are you using to contact the modem?  It's possible the
program isn't set to display results from the modem back.
