Since FreeBSD comes with the pseudo-device ppp disables,
and since this pseudo-device is needed by the pppd daemon,
this may be the reason why you can't make it work. In
FreeBSD, the *ppp* utility is used instead of *pppd*. The
first one uses tun0 instead of ppp as pseudo-device. If
it's your case, then you should uncomment that line in
your system's configuration file:

#pseudo-device  ppp     1

Then you can rebuild your system.
