This was also posted to the mailing lists, where I responded there.

In any case, the problem is due to FreeBSD not support the 3C589[C]
model (as oppposed to the 'B' model), which wasn't released when we did
2.1R. The driver has been patched since to support this card, but that
doesn't help folks without a boot disk.

There are two easy solutions:
1) Use the BSD-Nomad PC-CARD disk. See:
http://www.mt.cs.keio.ac.jp/person/hosokawa/freebsd-pcmcia/

2) Use a boot disk from any of the newer installs. Since the install follows
the same rules, you can use a newer boot floppy to install an older
   release.

Once you get everything installed, it will require upgrading to either
-current or -stable to get a driver that works with the 3C589C card, but
that's pretty easy. (See the handbook)

Also note that -current now has early-beta support for hot swappable
PC-CARD support. I've been writing my own code plus re-writing and
integrating the Nomad code mentioned above, and the first cut of this
code now exists in -current. If you want to stay current with what's
going on, join the 'freebsd-mobile' mailing list. Send email to
majordomo@FreeBSD.org for instructions on how to join.
