Date: 26 Apr 1996 10:23:30 -0500 Organization: Mississippi State University Lines: 37 Message-ID: <aak2.830530576@Ra.MsState.Edu> NNTP-Posting-Host: ra.msstate.edu X-Newsreader: NN version 6.5.0 #2 (NOV) I just bought a Western Digital 2.5GB hard drive and it doesn't seem to work under FreeBSD ! I have a very new ASUS motherboard with Award BIOS. The BIOS had problems with the hard drive size. It didnt have any problems with 2.1GB IDE HD but it was recognizing the 2.5 and 445MB drive. I went ahead and downloaded Mr. BIOS from www.mrbios.com and that solved the problem. (Side note : Have you guys checked out Mr. BIOS yet ? It looks very nice and is very capable. At least it is much better than Award BIOS that came with ASUS motherboard). Now FreeBSD is getting the right parameters and doesnt give me an error anywhere during installation but a slight warning that I get even if I try a very small hard drive "Warning : Calculated sectors per cylinder (3623) disagrees with disk label (1008)" I have tried more than 20 different configurations (spent the entire night working at this) and everytime I select the commit option it starts downloading the files via ftp and copying them on the formatted HD and then it just stops. The machine doesnt crash but it stops doing anything. I can switch between the consoles and use Ctrl-C to abort. But its really really very surprising to see it stop, no error messages or anything. As soon as I put another hard drive in it, it all works without pauses. I however noticed that when I use the "Auto-partition" when installing it goes a little further when installing files over ftp connection before it stops. Any helpful hints would be very appreciated.
