The problem is now solved. The motherboard is an ASUS PVI-486SP3. In the BIOS setup there is a setting for 'Onboard IDE prefetch buffer', which was enabled. When I disabled this, everything worked just fine. It *is* documented in the manual for the MB ("If you install any kind of PCI bus master expansion card you must set this to disabled") - my own fault for not reading the manual thoroughly enough. Can anybody tell me why an onboard IDE prefetch buffer should influence PCI bus master cards? Cache coherency issues? Steinar Haug, Nethelp consulting, sthaug@nethelp.no
