The problem is now solved. The motherboard is an ASUS PVI-486SP3. In the
BIOS setup there is a setting for 'Onboard IDE prefetch buffer', which
was enabled. When I disabled this, everything worked just fine. It *is*
documented in the manual for the MB ("If you install any kind of PCI bus
master expansion card you must set this to disabled") - my own fault for
not reading the manual thoroughly enough.
Can anybody tell me why an onboard IDE prefetch buffer should influence
PCI bus master cards? Cache coherency issues?
