Date: Thu, 02 May 1996 01:08:25 -0700 Message-ID: <18782.831024505@time.cdrom.com> From: "Jordan K. Hubbard" <jkh@time.cdrom.com> The May 1st snapshot of FreeBSD 2.2 is now released and available for anonymous FTP from ftp.freebsd.org and its mirrors. This SNAP will is also available from Walnut Creek CDROM on CD, along with the latest CVS repository, CTM deltas for ports, src and CVS and the 2.2 packages collection. What's new since 2.2-960323-SNAP: --------------------------------- Early support for APM (automated power management) and PCCARD (formerly PCMCIA) features of laptops. Many PCCARD devices are supported, from modems to ethernet cards to SCSI adaptors. Adaptec AIC7850 support has been added. The Yellow Pages (NIS) support has had many optimizations made and no longer has portions copyright under the GPL. Various VM system enhancements and a few bugs fixed (gzip'd binaries now work again, for example). The system installation tool has been revamped with slightly different menu behavior and a number of bugs have been fixed. It's hoped that this installation will be more intuitive for new users than previous ones (feedback welcomed, of course). Much miscellaneous cleanup work with the header files and sources. More details are available from: ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/2.2-960501-SNAP/RELNOTES.TXT How to obtain the release: -------------------------- From FTP: ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/2.2-960501-SNAP/ If you will be installing over FTP, all you need is the floppies/boot.flp image. If you have a 4MB machine, use the floppies/boot4.flp image. The snapshot is also available from numerous mirrors around the world. For best results, try: ftp://ftp.<yourcountrydomain>.freebsd.org for the nearest mirror. Mirrors are also numbered, so ftp2.freebsd.org, ftp3.freebsd.org and so on also point to alternate sites if the primary one is busy. Once you've made the boot floppy and booted from it, you'll be given a more complete menu of FTP sites to choose from for loading the rest. From CDROM: This and future SNAPs may be ordered from: Walnut Creek CDROM 4041 Pike Lane, Suite D Concord CA, 94520 Email: orders@cdrom.com WWW: http://www.cdrom.com Price is $29.95 for a single CD or $14.95 for a subscription (which you may cancel at any time). The CD also contains additional data which may be useful to the developer, such as the CVS repository and full sources for XFree86 (+ contributed X sources). As always, please let us know if you experience any problems with this snapshot, especially during the installation since that portion of the system has been somewhat revamped for this SNAP (/stand/sysinstall can also now be used more effectively after the system is installed for further customization of the system). For more information, please see the documentation on the boot floppy. See also http://www.freebsd.org if you'd like more information on these 2.2 SNAP releases and the philosophy behind their creation. Thanks! - Jordan ------- =_aaaaaaaaaa--
