I had this same problem when I impatiently tried to build XFree82-1.1
without reading all the docs. I couldn't get it to work setting the
various parameters in XConfig.
The last try I gave it was to rebuild everything leaving out all the
drivers that weren't necessary, in my case ET4000. Now it
works wonderfully and and prints this message:
XFree86 v1.1 Xwindow System
(protocol version 11, revision 0 vendor release 5000)
Configured drivers:
VGA256(256color svga):
ET4000
