Summary: Errors on boot up for my tape drive. HELP!
Keywords: Adaptec-2940UW, cable, tape drive
X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL2]

I borrowed a friend's tape drive (a regular SCSI (-2?)) 4mm to do a
backup of my hard drive. My machine has an Adaptec 2940 fast-wide
card.

First I shelled out $90 for a cable to connect my wide SCSI to the
50-pin Centronics connector on the tape drive.

The computer does recognize the tape drive as SCSI device #3 before
installing BIOS, but on boot up I get:

ahc0 <Adaptec 2940 Ultra SCSI host adapter> rev 0 int a irq 11 on pci0:10
ahc0: aic7870 Ultra Wide Channel, SCSI Id=7, aic7870, 255 SCBs
ahc0 waiting for scsi devices to settle
(ahc0:0:0): "Quantum XP32150W 81HB" type 0 fixed SCSI 2
sd0(ahc0:0:0): Direct-Access 2050MB (4199760 512 byte sectors)
(ahc0:1:0): "TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-5401TA 3605" type 5 removable SCSI 2
cd0(ahc0:1:0): CD-ROM cd present.[325252 x 2048 byte records]
ahc0:A:3: Warning - message rejected by target: 0xff

...and I get "device not configured" errors when I try to tar to
/dev/rst0.

So, it recognized the Adaptec board, the hard drive, and the CD-ROM,
but then gives me that weird error when it gets to the tape drive.

Someone suggested that the board maybe trying to address the tape
drive as a fast-wide device.

So my questions are: Did I get the wrong cable? Do I need to get a
special cable that goes from a wide SCSI to a regular SCSI? Will I be
able to use this tape drive or do I have to go out and buy a special
fast-wide tape drive?

Thanks for any and all suggestions,
