this is _very_ false.  the linux kernel is gpl'ed.  all of FreeBSD is
either under a BSD style license or a GPL.  This makes them freely
redistributeable, but _not_ freeware.  The authors still have copyright
and there are a lot of restrictions on use in commercial settings on
code under a GPL.
