No, you're definitely not :-)
You have to get the beta release of XFree86, X312D. There's native
support for the 7543. You also might want to check
http://www.yy.cs.keio.ac.jp/contrib/sanpei/how2800x600.html.
Here's my XF86config, for an AST Ascentia 950N. It's hacked together
with xf86config, but works like a charm...
