You are free to call them `crap', that's why they are so cheap. Get a used old Archive Viper 150 for a rock-solid and most likely < US$ 400 drive, or perhaps even a Wangtek 5150EQ (QIC-02 with separate interface card, most likely even cheaper than the Viper).
