My cdrom was plugged into the second IDE controller on its own and hence was the master device. By default cdroms seem to come jumpered for slave. I changed this and off it went. Stangely, MSDOS does not seem to notice the incorrect jumper setting. When it is working correctly the configuration script will say that it found the device as the system boots. If it doesnt then it has not found it.
