i highly recommend cvs. 

although it uses rcs `underneath' it is a joy to use.
Used sccs back in 1993 for a small group project, and then when that wasnt
available, i used rcs for another project (last year) and found it was a 
bit annoying. 

cvs is simple, powerful and reliable imho.
