Here in the islands, the power is truly atrocious and a real test of UPS reliability. After hurricane Hugo (1989) we had a Best 5KVA unit that sat out in the *rain* for two years (building partially blown away) and except for a battery replacement (unit was trapped by debris surrounding the building it lived in). Another time this same unit had it's main logic board zapped by our crack physical plant personel *arc welding* on the input circuit (really), but the equipment it was protecting suffered no hurt. After hurricane Marilyn (1995), the entire University operated off a diesel generator for 2 months (try that sometime). The ferroresonant technology employed by Best acts as a line conditioner/voltage regulator even if the battery is dead. Frequency shifts (ferroresonant's Achilles heel) are normally handled by going over to inverter, no worries about voltage spikes/sags there. Before moving to St. Thomas I worked at Oregon State University for 8 years and in that time we had one power outage. In St. Thomas we have experienced outages as frequent as 30/month (it is better these days). There have been spikes that would curl your hair, and brownouts are also common. In these conditions, you separate the lambs from the goats when it comes to UPSes. I bet on Best units for anything larger than 400VA. At GSA prices they cost about $1/VA; cheap when you consider what the power company and/or mother nature can do to your equipment.
