OK; I don't need anybody to compile a kernel; I temporarily forgot about
the -c mode, but I reconfigured, and it works (the com port that is).

Amazingly enough, I got PPP working on the 3rd try, only because I was
mistyping my DNS. I connected to ftp.freebsd.org, got the nice box saying
"getting root image from /pub/FreeBSD/[black box]". I switched to alt-f2,
and a bunch of files scrolled down the list...the last one being
/stand/ls. It didn't seem to do anything, and I figured it was getting a
file, so I went outside and did some stuff for 20 minutes. The screen
hadn't budged, so I aborted the installation, then turned on the "extra
debugging" option. I could see the ftpget command, but I didn't see one
after the /stand/ls, so the system did hang.

What's supposed to happen next, and how can I make it happen?

Eric
