Date: Fri, 23 Oct 92 14:28:00 GMT Lines: 41 By some miracle, I got the 386BSD binaries (bin01) loaded, expanded and running without too much problem. However, etc01 was not as easy. "extract etc01" resulted in: (etc01 stuff was placed in /tmp at that time) Final installation: /tmp/install.etc01: Can't open /tmp/install.etc01 extract: Cannot executre installation script of distribution, failed The manifest for etc01 makes no mention of install.etc01! (bin01 manifest lists install.bin01 however) So instead I used: "cd /; cat /usr/tmp/etc01.* | zcat | cpio -iadmlu" which worked like a champ. Now, on to my problems. I've looked for FAQs, bug reports, etc; but no solutions...heck, I've even read the installation notes several times. (What? You read the directions?) 1) man newfs says I need to do a disklabel on a new floppy before running. OK fine, but disklabel wants a _formatted_ floppy? So I formatted via MSDOS, then "disklabel -w -r fd0a floppy" gives me: disklabel: ioctl DIOCSDINFO: Device not configured ioctl DIOCWLABEL: Device not configured C'mon, formatting, labeling, and creating the filesystem shouldn't be this difficult to figure out, could it? (HELP!...) 2) How do I define swap space? Did I miss something in the installation process? I did set aside 20MB or so on the hard disk (i.e. unpartitioned) for such a purpose. How do I set it up and tell the kernel to use it? 3) I there anything else I should know? I'm no system administrator. I've only been a user/programmer for 10 years. Any pointers to docs?
