Hello. I am trying out shell/PPP service at a new internet provider.

In doing so, there are at least a few UNIX shell utilities I am
used to using on one provider's BSD 4.1.3 system (specifically
/usr/local/bin/rn and /usr/local/bin/postnews) that are not available
on the new provider's Solaris OS.

Regarding my interest in finding a new newsreader (and news poster) to
use under a Solaris shell window (using telnet, ZTerm, etc.) - what is
a good equivalent reader to rn I could be using?

My requirements in a reader are fairly simple: I am looking for a
news reader that:

1. runs in char mode while dialed up to my shell account

2. creates (and keeps updated) a .newsrc type file which contains
   a complete (and growing) list of all newsgroups supported by provider

3. lets me run the newsreader on a command line with flags and the name
   of the group I want to read. (This way each day I can run a shell
   script that 'walks' me through a list of specific newsgroups I want
   always go to when I run the script.

4. lets me first look at a list of subject lines with article numbers
   of every unread article in the group I'm currently reading; then
   display a particular article (if I enter it's # or select it somehow);
   then go back to reading the subject line/ article number list (leaving
   off with the most recent article read or listed).

   [when I use the differnet rn under Solaris, the list command '='
    always begins listing unread articles beginning with the oldest
   unread, *not* the most recent article read or listed...]

5. when done reading or listing articles up to the most recent article
   received for the current newsgroup, then mark that particular group as
   all read, and then repeat the process for each specific news group I have
   created in the shell script.

6. the shell script mite look like (substituting rn for a recommended
   other newsreader to use)::

   rn  -T -q -N -e -m comp.infosystems.www.providers
   rn  -T -q -N -e -m rec.music.synth
   rn  -T -q -N -e -m ca.earthquakes

7. similarly, what's a good/popular UNIX char utility for posting news
   to a newsgroup? (I'm accustomed to using: postnews).

Thanks in advance for any tips/pointers on which UNIX char newsreader
(and poster) would let me do these things.
