I have recently installed FreeBSD 2.1 on a new Micron PC
containing these relevant devices (this is an excerpt from
the demsg output)

(This machine is a Pentium P-166)
chip0 <Intel 82437 (Triton)> rev 2 on pci0:0
chip1 <Intel 82371 (Triton)> rev 2 on pci0:7
ahc0 <Adaptec 2940 Ultra SCSI host adapter> rev 0 int a irq 11 on pci0:17
ahc0: aic7870 Ultra Single Channel, SCSI Id=7, aic7870, 255 SCBs
ahc0 waiting for scsi devices to settle
(ahc0:0:0): "QUANTUM XP32151 1074" type 0 fixed SCSI 2
sd0(ahc0:0:0): Direct-Access 2053MB (4205100 512 byte sectors)
ahc0: target 4 requests 5.0MB/s transfers, but adapter in Ultra mode can only sy
nc at 10MB/s or above
ahc0:A:4: Warning - message rejected by target: 0x1
(ahc0:4:0): "PLEXTOR CD-ROM PX-6XCS 1.02" type 5 removable SCSI 2
cd0(ahc0:4:0): CD-ROM
cd0(ahc0:4:0): NOT READY asc:3a,0 Medium not present

The problem I'm having is that I cannot mount from the
CD unit. (BTW, I installed from a local NFS image of
the install CD). I execute the following command:

mount_cd9660 /dev/cd0a /cdrom

and the device apparently times out, a BUS RESET
is queued, the device times out, and the whole system
wedges. I am booting a kernel with DDB, but the magic
keyboard sequence does not get me into the debugger.
The same CD-ROM drive works fine with Windows95 on the
same physical system. The CD is OK, because I can mount
it (using the same command) on another FreeBSD box nearby.

I thought this might be a hardware problem, so I swapped the
CD drive with that same nearby box, which started with
this configuration:

(This machine is a Pentium P-90)
bt0: Bt946C/ 0-PCI/EISA/VLB(32bit) bus
bt0: reading board settings, busmastering, int=10
bt0: version 4.25J, fast sync, parity, 32 mbxs, 32 ccbs
bt0: targ 0 sync rate=10.00MB/s(100ns), offset=15
bt0: targ 1 sync rate=10.00MB/s(100ns), offset=15
bt0: targ 2 sync rate= 4.00MB/s(250ns), offset=15
bt0: Using Strict Round robin scheme
bt0 at 0x330 irq 10 on isa
bt0 waiting for scsi devices to settle
(bt0:0:0): "SEAGATE ST32550N 0012" type 0 fixed SCSI 2
sd0(bt0:0:0): Direct-Access 2047MB (4194058 512 byte sectors)
(bt0:1:0): "SEAGATE ST31200N 8648" type 0 fixed SCSI 2
sd1(bt0:1:0): Direct-Access 1006MB (2061108 512 byte sectors)
(bt0:2:0): "TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-3401TA 1094" type 5 removable SCSI 2
cd0(bt0:2:0): CD-ROM
cd0(bt0:2:0): NOT READY asc:3a,0 Medium not present
Probing for devices on the PCI bus:
chip0 <Intel 82437 (Triton)> rev 1 on pci0:0
chip1 <Intel 82371 (Triton)> rev 2 on pci0:7
pci0:13: Bus Logic, device=0x1040, class=storage (scsi) [no driver assigned]

When I swapped the Toshiba drive into the machine with the
Adaptec Ultra controller, they worked fine together. Then I
put the Plextor into the machine with the BusLogic controller,
and they worked fine together also!

So, I suppose I can leave the drives swapped and go on with my
programming life. However, I was wondering if anyone else out
there has noticed a problem like this one, and if it is likely
to be the new Adaptec Ultra controller, or the Plextor 6x CD drive.
