I'm not going to say our power is worse than Buddy's in the islands,
but it's pretty hairy. I live out in the sticks (read, pretty rural)
in Texas, and our power co-op seems to have problems keeping the
power up at times, with power sometimes going up & down several
times a second. On top of that, we occasionally have some lovely
brownouts, and the A/C for our house (where the web server equipment
is housed) is old, and pretty much sucks every electron out of the
wires when the compressor & blower kick in. (This alone blows
several light bulbs a month). [Yes, we are a virtual company with no
formal offices.]

Beyond that, we have had a couple of direct lightning strikes
(inner, windowless rooms light up, no delay between flash & sound).
These have taken out two electric fences, an invisible fence (the
transmitter *and* receivers!), and an unprotected modem and HP
terminal (via the modem cable, it seems).

Meanwhile, our APC Back-UPS performs flawlessly. We have enough
reserve keep all the systems & communications up for an hour (with
the CRTs off), and several times this last year we've used
most of that, during which times the power tried to kick in
sporadically, usually with several attempts/second for several
seconds at a time.

We have had perfect performance from the APC equipment.

Since we couldn't find any standalone APC surge protection
locally, we have been using Curtis surge-protected power strips
with phone line protection. They have saved routers on more
than one occasion (including the last direct lightning strike).
