I don't >know enought to get around not-fully-debugged versions, and I don't >want to fill this usenet group with "HHHEEEELLLLPPP" posts of my own. I run the SNAP wihout any seroius problems! IMHO If you don't need the new advantages of the the SNAP, you won't need other help, than under 2.1R. >My install of 2.1.0 took over 3 hours using floppy on my machine and I >have plenty of RAM. (8mb on MB and 4mb more on bus) Seems enough, I ran FreeBSD 2.1R with an 386SX-20 and 5MB with a normal performance I think. The machine acted as a ppp router to dial my ISP. I disabled nfs and other things, I didn't need. Although I now switched this box to a 386-DX-40 with 8MB and surprise, suprise I can really work with the machine. Dial into from other sites, act as a router for the ISP, using modem and ISDN. >Just to tell you how slow it is, if I do man **anything** for the first >time, it takes 2 ~ 3 minutes to uncompress the man page I asked for. >It will be faster after the 2nd time, of course. If you often read man pages ;-), perhaps you should switch to an 486-DX. It's a real jump, cause of the internal cache. And you should be able to get a used 486board for at least $75,- Perhaps you could use your RAM, HDD, FD .. at the new machine. >even have ppp. My idea was to connect by eithernet my RTs and FreeBSD, >FreeBSD calls the internet via ppp over a dialup link, RTs talk to >FreeBSD box via 10base2. Runs fine with my 386-dx-40 box, so I "provide" internet (at home) for a Win NT and another FreeBSD computer. >Anyhow, please let me know how you make out on your configuration. How did you install? You mentioned floppy ... the whole system with floppies? If so - you even will need 3 hours to install the system, nevertheless you switched to P6-200mhz ;-) >ps. I also have a 386sx-33 motherboard. Maybe I should try this one :) I don't think so. best regards Dirk -- Dirk Nerling nerle@pdv.de http://www.pdv.de/~nerle You read my own humble opinion - it's NOT an offical statement of the firm PDV-Systeme Erfurt!
