Have you tried changing the read/write block sizes to 1k ?  If you're network
cards perform very differently (or your OS?), this can matter hugely !

On FreeBSD it would be

    mount -t nfs -o -r1024,-w1024 freebsdbox:/blah /mnt

: (It doesn't hang the machine -- it just never exits and mounts).  But 
: interestingly, if I do a showmount on the freebsd box at that time, it says 
: that the Linux box DID mount something off it.  Eventually, i have to just kill
: the mount process on the Linux box to recover.  Any ideas would be greatly
: appreciated.
