That's my point exactly.  It's the old "bait-and-switch" game that you
always expect from the clones - although I expect to have to ask "128k
or 256k?" not "is there any cache at all?".

So here we have IBM exploiting the FUD factor, implying their name
brand will protect you from such practice, and as soon as you drop
your guard, they stick the knife in.  Same brochure was titled
"Multimedia-Ready" and the system in the pic had CD and speakers.  Not
in the spec, though; i.e. no sound card and CD listed, but no "space
to add multimedia later" line either.  If you don't ask the right
questions, you get burned...

Cache upgradability (128k / 256k / 512k is the common range for 486DXn
boards) is typical in generic systems, BTW; although empty sockets are
rare, some folks fill 'em with dummy chips     ;-<
