I guess the ATAPI interface is considered "experimental" because of the installation problems, but once you managed to install it, it works fine. I installed FreeBSD from CD (my drive is a Goldstar 4X) using the atapi kernel, but I had to add a second hard disk. i.e. primary controller: hard disk where FreeBSD was installed, no slave secondary controller: hard disk master, cd-rom drive slave After installation was completed, I rebuilt the kernel in order to remove the second hard disk and use the CD drive as master. If you can't borrow temporarily another hard disk, then you can install a minimal system from a DOS partition, and the rest from the cd-rom when you get it working. There was another trick here: I could not convince sysinstall that the CD-ROM was there, so I mounted the CD (by typing: mount_cd9660 /dev/wcd0c /cdrom) and then told sysinstall that the installation media was "file system" on directory /cdrom. Hope this helps. Good luck, Luis ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jose Luis Scanferlato "La mala suerte no existe" e-mail: jls@acm.org (Carlos Reutemann)
