You can install the DES compatibility package.  This will downgrade
your password encryption from the original MD5 to the DES algorithm.

Make sure to _not_ get the `des' distribution from any server in the
US.  Alas, ftp.internat.freebsd.org doesn't have the best line to the
outside world, you could try some other European servers first.  (I'm
not sure which of the ftp*.de.freebsd.org servers does have a `des'
distribution readily available.  If all else fails, drop me a mail and
i will see to compile one and get it up on one of these servers.)

And yes, NIS is available.  However, don't ask me for the setup, i've
never been using it.
