Okay, okay, I figured out the problem...  When I unpacked a tar file, it
changed the permissions on the / directory to 650.  Why a tar was packed like
this, I don't know, but it was.  The reason that it took me so long to figure
out, was that I wasn't even in the root directory.  I was in the /root
directory when it happened.  So a warning to any people who unpack the kernal
rebuild tar: don't let it change your directory perms!

My thanks to all of the people who beat me over the head on this one.  I needed
it!
