When I unpacked a tar file, it changed the permissions on the / directory to 650. Why a tar was packed like this, I don't know, but it was. The reason that it took me so long to figure out, was that I wasn't even in the root directory. I was in the /root directory when it happened. So a warning to any people who unpack the kernal rebuild tar: don't let it change your directory perms! My thanks to all of the people who beat me over the head on this one. I needed it!
