Keywords: Backup DAT Tape Hell

Here's a fun one:

Adaptec 1542CP Controller
Sony SDT-5000 2/4G DAT Drive

The Sony replaces an old and venerable Archive 150MB QIC unit which
always worked fine.

The DAT 'seems to work fine EXCEPT if I issue a command like 'mt erase'.

The system runs for a while (apparently erasing the tape) and then
locks the SCSI subsystem up. It scribbles the following all over the
console:

sd0(aha0:4:0): timed out	// This is the DAT Drive
sd0(aha0:0:0): timed out	// This is a Micropolis 3243-19MZ Q4D 4G Drive
adapter not taking commands.. frozen?!
Debugger("aha1542") called

Any driver geniuses out there have some theories???

Cheers,
