Sorry, the only "original post" I can find is that of:

| Chris Goellner
| Ciba Geigy Polymers NA
| UNIX System Admin

It was quoted in it's entirety, minus signature (above).

He is talking about the *ON BOARD* ethernet.

I find it impossible to believe that the BIOS on a motherboard
would be so designed as to prevent use of chips on the
motherboard.

Since the on board ethernet on the Compaq PROSIGNIA 300 works
with the FreeBSD "if_lnc" driver, if it is told where the I/O
and IRQ live, I find it impossible to believe that anything
other than the chip can affect the operation of the chip.

I also find it difficult to believe that the BIOS would be
capable of running, let alone actively interfering, with the
chip when the machine has been placed in protected mode.

I didn't mention FreeBSD before because it was a BSDI question
about hardware I was familiar with. I mention it now only as
one of three formal evidences that you are misleading Chris.

Perhaps you are confusing this with another thread?
