Actually, I found I had two problems.  One 
of them is fixed by the mkfontdir fix 
(thanks everyone for pointing it out), and 
the other was by including the classes.zip 
file from the jdk in the CLASSPATH 
environment variable, i.e. 
/usr/local/share/java/classes.zip:/usr/local/lib/netscape/moz3_0.zip

(or something like that).

Works beautifully for me now.  Should this go an an FAQ somewhere?
