The times 3com was first-class have been passed since. They've got too few buffer space, and their DMA capabilities are less useful than those on other chips. You can find a short discussion about the relative merits and drawbacks in the comments on top of the Linux driver for the 3c59x cards. I don't have the specs for the 3c59x available (haven't heard anything back from my query to 3Com within 3 days -- their Webserver is full of marketing crap, but you don't find the True Useful Information there), but i've got the specs for the 3c5x9 which are rather similar in design. Due to the limited buffer space, it's clearly marked as a ``client ethernet adapter''. Oh well, but Unix is a server o/s, and many people take these cards as being good in a server o/s. -- J"org Wunsch Unix support engineer joerg_wunsch@interface-business.de http://www.interface-business.de/~j
