Hey there, the same thing happens to my machine.  It does not depend on
the modem I use...Practical Peripherals internal or USR Courier External. 
Ocassionally it will just start using 80%-98% of the cpu.  This has been
pushing me to use pppd, but I'd rather have it fixed than a work-around.
