You're making it sound a *whole* lot harder than it is. Go ahead and 
configure your chosen machine as a gateway. Pull down the qpop package 
from the packages distribution and add it using pkg_add. Also uncomment 
the #pop3 line at the bottom of /etc/inetd.conf so it'll run.

Eudora will run fine from Windows 3.x, WFW, or Win95 over a TCP/IP 
network to this machine. Since I alternate between Windows and FreeBSD on 
my subnet, I either use Eudora or pine according to what I am doing.

The one question is: are you planning a full-time ppp connection to an 
ISP? I would recommend that since you want the POP server accessible at 
all times for incoming mail. My subnet does exactly this, using pppd to 
run the connection to my ISP. So far, it's working fine.
