(in the boot sequence.) So I corrected the /etc/sysconfig file to reflect the change, and now when I boot, it doesn't say "Network Unreachable", however right before the login prompt appears, the system coughs and says "ed1 timeout", and, of course, the machine can't be seen on the network. The new card is listed as a Novell NE2000 clone. ($30 frome MEI!!!) I really don't feel like coughing up >$100 for a 'real' one..
