I experienced similar symptoms when using a second IDE controller (brand
"Promise").  No prompt from the FreeBSD boot disk.  My solution was to
always boot from ms-dos via fbsdboot.  That made it work ok.  (Even
building a customized ATAPI kernel did not allow direct boots.)
