X is an absolute requirement, but this video card mess is driving me crazy. I've read the Linux FAQ and most of the postings in this group for the past week and a half or so, but the only thing I'm about is NOT wanting a Diamond card. Questions: Is S3 8514-based? Can X8514 drive S3 cards? If not, is there a version of X that can drive S3 cards? What needs to be done to get XFree86 to drive S3 cards, and is anyone currently working on it? I am planning to do some low-level graphics rendering through X, so fast S3 would be nice, but if it isn't going to work I need to know now so I can get a nice SVGA card such as an Orchid ProDesigner or Fahrenheit 1280 (and incidentally, just what is the difference between these cards?). Adding a full description of the Great Video Card Mess to the FAQ is probably a good idea... -Keith -- | Keith Mancus <mancus@sweetpea.jsc.nasa.gov> | | N5WVR | | "If I owned Texas and I owned Hell, I'd rent out Texas and live | | in Hell." -General Sheridan |
